Sustainable Basics: What to Actually Look For
Most sustainability language on clothing is unregulated. "Eco", "conscious" and "responsible" have no fixed definition, which means they carry no information. A few things on a label do carry information, and one of them matters more than all the rest.
Start with durability, because it is measurable
A garment worn for four years has a quarter of the annual footprint of the same garment replaced yearly. Nothing on a label competes with that arithmetic.
The useful part is that durability is not a claim — it is a set of physical features you can check:
- A covered waistband instead of exposed elastic. Exposed elastic is the single most common reason underwear is thrown away while the fabric is still fine.
- Ribbing containing elastane at collars, cuffs and hems, so they recover their shape instead of stretching out permanently.
- Reinforcement at stress points: a gusset in underwear, a double-stitched hem on a t-shirt, a real pocket bag in sweatpants.
- Longer-staple combed cotton, which pills less and therefore keeps looking wearable for longer.
These are the same features that make a garment good. Durability and quality are not two separate axes.
What the certifications actually cover
Certifications are more useful than adjectives because they have defined scopes. Knowing the scope is the point.
- GOTS covers organic fibre content plus environmental and social criteria through processing. It is the broadest of the common textile standards.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished product for harmful substances. It says nothing about how the fibre was grown or who made it — it is a chemical-safety standard, and a genuinely useful one for anything worn against the skin.
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard) verifies recycled content and adds social and environmental criteria.
A label listing a certification without naming a scope is worth less than one that says which standard, for which part of the product.
Organic cotton: real, partial
Organic cultivation avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, which is a genuine improvement in how the fibre is grown.
It says nothing about dyeing and finishing, which is where a large share of a textile's water use and chemical load sits. It also says nothing about construction — organic cotton assembled with a bare elastic waistband will still be discarded in a year.
Treat it as a positive attribute among several, not as a conclusion.
Recycled polyester: solves one thing
Recycled polyester reduces demand for virgin petrochemical feedstock, which is a real benefit.
It does not change the fact that polyester sheds microfibres in the wash, and recycled polyester sheds them exactly as much as virgin polyester. For garments worn next to the skin, where cotton or modal work perfectly well, the fibre choice matters more than whether it was recycled.
The part that is entirely yours
Once a garment is in your drawer, your habits determine most of its remaining footprint — and most of its lifespan.
- Wash at 30 °C. Lower energy per cycle, and heat is what destroys elastane.
- Skip the tumble dryer. It is the largest single energy cost in a garment's life and simultaneously the fastest way to wear it out.
- Skip fabric softener. It degrades elastane recovery, which shortens the life of the exact components that fail first.
- Rotate your stock. Wearing ten pairs evenly rather than three heavily multiplies the useful life of the set.
These four habits will do more for the footprint of your wardrobe than switching every fibre you buy.
A practical filter
Ask three questions in order. What will make this fail — and is that part built well? Which certification is named, and what does it cover? Only then: what is the fibre?
A well-built garment in conventional cotton, cared for properly, outlasts and out-performs a poorly-built one in certified organic cotton. The order of the questions is the whole point.
